This check list is in the following categories:
Grand Rapids is a beautiful city, and with Lake Michigan only an hour away there is a lot to see and do.
  • Michigan Whitecaps Baseball
A minor league, but major fun.
  • Art Prize -- in downtown Grand Rapids during September
This festival started in 2009 and is already one of the best in the United States. It attracts artists from miles away and fills the downtown area for two weeks in September. Art is auctioned off at the end of the festival.
  • Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park
Includes a must-see butterfly exhibit and a bronze horse statue that is so tall it might require binoculars to see the top.
  • Lake Michigan
Walk the beach at Holland State Park or Grand Haven. The sand is as nice as you'll find anywhere in the Caribbean and the water is great for swimming during July and August.
  • Saugatuck (on Lake Michigan)
...where quaint shops line the streets selling fudge, clothing, and interesting hand-made items. It is worth staying at a bed-n-breakfast Inn for a night too.
  • Ride the sand dunes in Douglas (just south of Saugatuck)
  • Windmill Island and the Wooden Shoe Factory in Holland (near Lake Michigan)
These attractions are a little dated, but still worth seeing.
  • Michigan Adventures Water Park (near Muskegon)
This is also an amusement park and it is so much fun for the thrill-seeker...it gives Cedar Point some serious competition.
  • Strikers or Craig's Cruisers
These offer arcade games, bumper cars, laser-tag, mini-golf and other sports where kids and teenagers can have fun.
  • Canonsburg Ski Area
Believe it or not, there is a ski hill that's a lot of fun in the winter for skiing and tubing. It's located just north of Grand Rapids (near Rockford.)
  • Kent Trails
A 15-mile paved trail for walking or bicycling through several parks and wooded areas.
  • Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum
  • Grand Rapids JazzFest
  • Fall festivities for the whole family at various farms around Grand Rapids during September and October.
Cider and donuts, crafts, pumpkins, games, farm animals, corn mazes... just check the newspaper for activities happening most every weekend during the fall.
  • Coopersville & Marne Railway
Located northwest of Grand Rapids, they offers train rides every Saturday (April-November) and special holiday-theme rides too. The children love it.
